Cutting the Fabric

We are using the Happy-Sewing Sophia Sewing Pattern to make these swimsuits. We cut one front piece and one back piece for the swimsuit. We cut out the same for the lining.

The fabric we are using is Lycra, a fabric that is made for swimwear.

The Lycra fabric is slippery, so fasten the pattern with pins and be careful while cutting. Please don't put any heat on the Lyca fabric. If you try to press it, It will melt, and the swimsuit will be ruined, leaving a mess at the same time.

Joining the Front and Back Panels.

Start with joining the front and back panel on both the outer layer of the fabric and the inner layer. We are joining the front and back panels at the shoulders, sides, and bottom. We start with applying clips and glue. We apply glips and then we add some glue. We have all the fabric inside out when we line them up. The Lycra fabric is so slippery. Using glue will help to keep things in place.

We sew the seams using stitching that is made for stretchy fabric and polyester threading.

I used my Baby Lock Victory serger and overlocked these seams.

Joining the outer layer and the lining.

Join the outer layer and the lining. Turn the lining inside out and place the outer layer inside the lining. We join these pieces at the neckline first.

Remember to fix any loose threading before joining the arm and leg openings.

Keep a close eye on the layers so they don't slip while sewing. We are going to add elastics in the leg and arm opening and a clean opening will make the job a lot easier!

The Elastic band

We are using an elastic band that is made for swimwear. Bands like this are usually much more "rubbery" because they are going to be in contact with water.

We are using an 8 mm wide band on these swimsuits.

Installing the Elastic band

We place the elastic band under the sewing foot and start sewing. We give the elastic band a steady pull around both arm openings. On the leg opening, we are giving the elastic band a slightly stronger pull around the backside of the swimsuit. It will give the swimsuit a better look!

When we have cut the elastic band, we sew over the end to secure it to the opening. You can see how we did it in the video below.

We are using a nice overlock seam to attach the rubber band. we are using 90mm thick needles on these bands, keep the needles from breaking!

We then fold the band inside the swimsuit, I give it a tight fold and stitch it together!
