Recommended tools:
The Turtleneck is not a difficult sew and it doesn't require any special equipment. a good pair of scissors, Measuring tools, clips, or pins and a sewing machine that have stitches for stretchy fabrics are all you need for this sew. for more advanced sewers, having a serger and or a cover stitch machine will really simplify this sew. In this tutorial, we are using a Husqvarna Opal 650, a Baby Lock Victory serger, and a Baby Lock cover stitch machine. If you want to know more about the Husqvarna opal 650, click here. For the Baby Lock Victory, Click here. We are also using rotary cutters and fabric glue.

Cutting and preparing the fabric
We first print out all pattern pieces. If you are unsure about how to print them you can click here to read how we recommend that you do it. In the link, you can also find more detailed measuring guides on our sewing patterns.
When you have printed the pattern and cut the size you wanted you simply tape the pieces together. You can place the pattern pieces directly on the fabric or you can draw them on plastic or use pattern paper to redraw it.
The sewing pattern has 4 pattern pieces. Front and back piece, sleeves, and neckpiece. All pieces have to be cut against the fold. That means that you fold the fabric when you cut. the fold has to be aligned with the marked area in the pattern.
Joining the front and back piece
When all the pattern pieces are ready we can start to assemble them. We start with the two most important pieces, the front and back piece. We want to hide the seam inside of the turtleneck so we have both fabrics inside out when aligning them. We align both shoulder seams and use glue and clips to keep them together. We stitch them together using a serger or a seam made for stretchy fabric on a regular sewing machine.

The Sleeves
We fold the sleeves and cut a small notch at the center point. We then align the notch with the shoulder seam. all pieces have to be inside out. We stitch it together using a Baby Lock Victory serger or a regular sewing machine with stitches made for stretchy fabric.
We are also adding a hem on the bottom of the sleeves. (Sleeve opening) We fold it about 2 cm, depending on the size, and stitch it together. I'm using a cover stitch machine for this, but a decorative seam on a regular sewing machine works fine!

The Sideseams
With the sleeves in place, it's time to close the turtleneck with both sideseams. We align both sides from the sleeve opening all the way to the bottom of the sweater. The sweater is inside out to hide the side seam. I'm overclocking the sideseams, but a regular sewing machine with stitching made for stretchy fabric works fine. Keep in mind that we are folding the bottom of the sleeve later. If you are having problems with sewing over a thicker layer of fabric I recommend that you hem the bottom now before adding the thick sideseams. If that isn't a problem I recommend that you also hem it after the sideseam as it will leave a much nicer result. I recommend that the bottom hem should be around 2.5 cm. If you are sewing this for someone that is taller than normal I would recommend a smaller hem. we use the same stitching on the bottom hem as we did on the hem on the sleeve opening.
The Neckpiece
You cant make a turtleneck without the neck, so let's add it to our sweater.
The first thing we have to do is join the two sides of the neckpiece. we are joining the two short sides of the neckpiece. Remember to fold it to hide the stitching inside the neckpiece.
We stitch it together with e stretchy seam or an overlock. We then fold horizontally and align both edges. I recommend that you mark all the seams with applying clips. We then turn the sleeve inside out and place the neckpiece the right way out in the neck opening. We then align the seam on the neck with the seam on the sweater. We then stitch it together.
When that is done we have sewn a perfect turtleneck. Remember to fasten any loose threading.
