Updated: Mar 14, 2022

A fun, easy sewing project is to make your own sewing machine cover. You can add pockets that can hold your tools and design the cover just as you want. In this article, I will show you how I made my cover.

This is an easy sewing project for beginners and you don't need a lot of tools. There is also a video tutorial and a free reference guide pattern for you at the bottom of the page.

We are sewing this Pattern cover for our Husqvarna Viking Opal 650, You can read more about it here.

The Tools we need:

The tools we do need to make the sewing machine cover are scissors, a glue pen, and pins. The glue pen is optional, but it will definitely make your sewing projects easier.

Cutting the fabric

If you are using our sewing machine cover pattern, place the pattern against the fold and cut two side panels, one front, and one back panel.

If you want to make your own sewing machine cover pattern, measure each side of the sewing machine, and add 1 cm on each side. Remember to take the flywheel into account. The pocket panel is the size of the front panel, minus 10-12 cm. If you are unsure about how big you want to make the pocket, cut the front panel first and use the front panel as a guide. We are going to fold the bottom of the cover 2-5 cm. Take that into account when you measure the pocket.

Cutting: You can use a scissor or a rotary cutter, Remember to take the direction of the fabric into account.

The Pocket lip.

If you are going to add a pocket to your sewing machine cover, Fold the pocket opening twice and apply pins to keep it in place, and stitch it together. We are using a regular sewing machine for these seams. We make this lip to protect our pockets from ripping. It also strengthens the pocket to hold heavier sewing accessories.

Attaching the pocket piece

With the pocket lip in place, we can attach the pocket piece to the front panel. We simply align it and apply pins to keep it in place.

If you are going to divide the pockets / Make pocket rooms, prepare them before you sew the pocket in place

We measure and mark the pocket dividers. I make a small mark at the bottom, we are going to make a fold at the bottom of the sewing machine cover anyway, so it wont be nessesarry.

We then sew these seams before we move to the next step.

The side panels:

We start working on the side panels, we align them with pins or clips. We did also use glue for stabilization. We are using a striped fabric, so we have to get the alignment right.

we use the other end of the side panels to measure them with each other to make sure that the stripes match.

Then we stitch them together, with a seam that matches our fabric type.

The Back panel:

I would recommend attaching the sewing machine top panel before you attach the back panel. We align the back panel with the two side panels and apply pins to keep things in place.

Attaching Top Panel:

The Sewing machine covers top panel is the hardest to align. It needs to match the front panel as well as the side panel. matchine the panels can be tricky so take your time when you align the top panel. When it's perfectly aligned, Take it to the sewing machine and stitch it together.

The Bottom fold:

The last sewing we do is folding the bottom of the sewing machine cover. We then sew it.
