What do we need?

What you must-have for making these pants is a cutter, sewing patterns, and a sewing machine. For the best result, I recommend that you have

a string, elastic band, glue pen, pins, and clips.

The Pocket pants are no longer available, Can we suggest this sewing pattern:

Cutting: We cut all the pattern pieces. For our tutorial, we cut three ribbons, the front and back panel, and two pocket pieces on each side. You can watch the video below if you want to get a better view of the pattern pieces. The fabric we are using is a camouflage French Terry fabric. We use this fabric for every piece besides the string. If you need any tips on how to cut the patterns, check out the video at the bottom of the page. You can click here to read a guide about the different fabric types.

Joining the Panels.

We place the two front panels upside down and apply clips at the crotch. We then turn the front panel facing the right way. We apply the first pocket piece in the pocket opening on the front piece, on each side. The wrong way of the pocket piece is facing upwards. You can check out the video if you need to get a better view. We then join the back pieces, using the same method as we did on the front piece.

When all pieces are aligned, we stitch them together.

Sewing: We use a baby lock victory serger when we sew these seams. If you don't have a serger you can use a regular sewing machine. I would recommend stitches for stretchy fabric, like a false overlock seam.

Preparing the ribbons

The ribbons are easy to prepare, we fold them in the middle and join the ends of the ribbons. We do it on all three ribbons. it's very important the ribbons are the wrong way out so that we don't get any visible stitches on the ribbons.

We sew the ribbons the same way as we did earlier. Make sure to use a seam for stretchy fabric.

The Last Pocket Piece | Joining the back and front piece.

We are soon ready to install the ribbons we made, but first, we have to install the last pocket piece and sew them in place. This time the pocket piece we installed earlier is the right way out, the front piece and the pocket piece we are installing is the wrong way out. These seams can also be sewn on any sewing machine, as long as you choose a seam that's suited for stretchy fabric.

When the pocket is installed, we can finally join the front and back piece. we place these pieces the inside out as well. We are going to sew the inner seams and the side seams, to save time we prepare them and sew them at the same go.

The reason why we are doing this is to get the seams on the inside of the garment. If you want to have visible sideseams you simply do this the right way out, That works for any other seams on the garment. Since I love the camouflage fabric, I'm not going to add any decorative seams this time.

Installing the Ribbons

Leg Ribbons:

We start by folding all ribbons vertically, We align both ends and secure them using clips. We then install the ribbons in the leg opening, We have the pants and the ribbons inside out.

We align the seam we made earlier with the inner seam. You can click on the image to get a better view. There is also a video at the bottom of the page that will show you how to do it.

Waist Ribbon:

We do exactly the same on the waist ribbon, but we don't sew all the way around the ribbon, because we need to leave an opening for the elastic band. When the elastic band is placed inside the ribbon, we are going to close the opening.

The Elastic band

The elastic band is there to hold the pants in place. It's very important to install the band the correct way to make sure that it provides the best comfort.

How to measure the elastic band: We measure the waist of our model and subtract 2cm. This formula works in all of our sizes.

How to install the elastic band: Place one end inside the ribbon and guide it through the ribbon. I use a safety pin to get a good grip while I'm guiding it. When you have reached the opening, secure the ribbon by attaching it to the other end with pins or clips. You then stitch the ends together using a sewing machine. Here it is really important that you use a stretchy seam.

Closing the ribbon and attaching the String

We close the ribbon opening by stitching it together. The seam can look a bit different than the other seams, so make sure to leave the opening of the backside of the pants.

We then sew two lines around the entire ribbon, to keep it from shifting in the washing machine. At the last round, we place the string under the sewing foot and include the string. The string is only there for esthetic reasons.

That's how you sew the Happy-Sewing Pocketpants!
