The Equipment

What we need to make these shorts are cutters, fabric, some elastic band, and the sewing pattern.

We are using scissors, Rotary Cutter, Clips, Gluepen, Pins, Elastic band, the fabric, and the sewing pattern, So a few more tools to make the process easier. if you want to read more about the tools I have and recommend you can click here.

Cutting the Fabric

We are using the happy-sewing pattern to make these swim trunks. We cut two back panels, two front panels, and two side panels.

The fabric we are using is Lycra, a fabric that is made for swimwear.

The Lycra fabric is slippery, so fasten the pattern with pins and be careful while cutting. Please don't put any heat on the Lyca fabric. If you try to press it, It will melt, and the trunks will be ruined, leaving a mess at the same time.

Joining the back and side panels.

We join the back and side panels, first, we apply glips and then we add some glue. We have all the fabric inside out when we line them up. The Lycra fabric is so slippery. Using glue will help to keep things in place.

We sew the seams using stitching that is made for stretchy fabric and polyester threading.

I used my Baby Lock Victory serger and overlocked these seams.

The Front Panels

With the back and side panels joined, we can start working on the front panel. We align the front panels with the sides, and we apply clips and glue to keep them in place. Everything is inside out here as well. We are overlocking these seams doing the same as we did on the back and side panels.

Joining the front panels

When we have attached the front panels to the side panels we can join the front panels.

We align the front panels in the opening, keeping them in place with clips and glue. We overlock this seam as well. If you want to stitch the other seams down, we have to do it before we join the front panels. The swim trunks will be more comfortable to wear if you stitch them down.

Folding the bottom of the shorts.

We fold both leg openings of the shorts. We fold it 3 cm (1.18"). We secure the fold with a nice wide elastic seam. I'm using my Baby Lock Coverstitch machine for this job.

The Elastic band

Now it's time for the top fold. And we start with the elastic band! There are two ways to get the right size on the band. The first one is to place the band directly on the lucky recipient of the shorts and find the comfy spot, then ad 1 cm and cut. The other way is to measure the waist and then subtract 2 cm. It's up to you!

When the band is cut, we have to join the ends. We sew one to two times across the band. Forward and backward.

Installing the Elastic band

When I install the band, I like to place four clips with equal distances between them. One clip is for the back, the clip that is right across is for the front, and the other two are for the sides. Then by aligning these clips with the front and back center seam and the sides with the center of the side panel, I'm sure that It's going to be installed the correct way. I sew the elastic band in place on a regular sewing machine, using three-point stitching. I sew right up to the clips before I remove them.

That's how we install the elastic band. And the top fold is folding the top over the elastic band like I'm doing here. I sew the top fold using the Baby Lock Coverstitch machine.

The last thing we do is fastening any loose threadings. That's how we made the Trevor swim trunks. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comment section. You can also click on the image to view the pattern. The video tutorial is also available below.
