The Sewing machines come pre-lubed and pre-oiled. It's not needed or recommended that you do that yourself. That means cleaning all accessible areas of the machine but also inside the bobbin house.

First impression and testing
The CS5055 feels like any other brother sewing machine. it feels solid, it has a generous well-lit workspace and a needle threader. It's easy to get started sewing. winding the bobbin and threading the machine was easy.
It does also sew well, It can handle heavy fabrics but it's not a big fan of layers. it is also very limited on the stitches as you cant adjust the stitch length or width. You change the presser foot by pressing a lever. Changing the needle is just as easy. Just remember to push the needle well up into the machine so it doesn't break while sewing. There is also a small LCD screen that gives you the most important information, like selected stitches, recommended sewing foot, and the needle position.
So the CS5055 feels like an easy and simple sewing machine, and it does an excellent job at being that.
A simple sewing machine
The CS5055 lacks some functions you are used to on a more expensive sewing machine. You cannot adjust the size of the stitches. The wheel in front is to adjust the thread tension. There is no start-stop function eighter. just a foot pedal. It does offer a decent-sized workspace, free arm, and 60 stitches. The stitch list is rather impressive. There are three types of overcasting stitches included, eight hemstitches included. two of them are blind hemstitch types. At the end of this review, you can find a chart of the included stitches. other than the stitches, I like the storage compartment in the front and how easy it is to remove to use the free arm. Some versions of the CS5055 have some form of speed control. The cheapest version does only has two options, Full or slow speed.
Who is this sewing machine made for?
I imagine the engineers at brother said; "let's create a good and cheap sewing machine without overcomplicating it". With this machine, their goal is to make a sewing machine that is made for those who might not have the biggest ambition in sewing. This market wants a sewing machine that's easy to understand and just works. If that's their goal, they hit it spot on. In our opinion, the Brother CS5055 might give more joy for beginners than an advanced high-tech sewing machine that is hard to learn and operate.
The Price
The Brother CS5055 costs between 120 and 170 USD.
At this price, you also get a decent list of accessories included.
We think that the CS5055 has a great price and offers good value for money.
Should you buy the Brother CS5055?
If you are in the need of an easy, simple and cheap sewing machine the Brother CS5055 is made for you. You won't be able to pull off the most advanced sewing projects, but it still does a great job on heavier fabrics.
