First Impressions:
The Sewing machine is small and sturdy. It's not an overwhelming amount of buttons, it feels comprehendible. It's also small in size, For many, this is a positive thing as it's easy to move and to hideaway. For others, the small size brings limitations as it also makes the workspace smaller.
I have a sewing studio with plenty of room so I would prefer a bigger sewing machine. The build quality feels like any other modern brother sewing machine. Its hard plastic on a metal frame and I am pretty sure that this plastic will start to make noise after a few months like all the other Brother machines we have tested. I do also like that it comes with a hardcover. It protects the machine, a drawback to this is that you cant tuck the cover away. I got a good first impression of the Brother Innov-is A80.
The Design
The buttons and the button placement are well thought off. The button placement is perfect and feels ergonomically correct. The most important buttons as the start/stop function are placed so you dont have to take your eyes off the needle, same goes for the speed controller slider and reverse button. The design does also makes it very clear how to thread the machine. The electronic jog dial is easy to learn and use, but it takes a little longer than if you had dials. The storage box has ok size, but it has to be removed if you purchase the extension table.
All in all the design is great, and I cant see how they could have dont things much differently.
Test Sewing
Setting up this machine was a dream. It's easy to wind the bobbin and to thread. This part can feel overwhelming for sewers, but dont worry. when you have done it a couple of times its much easier. The needle threader is also a blessing. Almost every modern sewing machine in this price range has a needle threader. The jog wheel works well enough on selecting stitches. I am blessed with a dial display on my sewing machine, so it feels like I'm fumbling a bit with the jog wheel. But this is not a deal-breaker. It sews well and it feels like you are in control of the machine. I put it to the famous layer test and it managed 7 layers of light fabric and 4 layers of heavier fabric (Denim). This is very impressive as it only has a 46 watts motor. The explanation for this is how the brother distributes power and how the feed dogs move the fabric. The sewing space is smaller, but its well light by the LED light. I do also like that you get a foot controller, so when your hands are busy, you can use your foot.
The Needle change went well, but you must make sure that it gets well up in the needle holder, otherwise, it will break. I have written more about the needle problem in this review.
The 80 stitches are enough for most sewers and the 8 buttonhole stitches work great.
To sum up, the test sewing went great. And besides these smalls things, I am more than satisfied with the performance of the Brother Innov-is A80
Should you buy the Brother Innov-Is A80
The Brother Innov-IS A80 is perfect for a seamstress who dont embarks on heavier projects that require a lot of space and power. If you need more stitches or a stronger motor you should not buy the Brother Innov-is A80. The Sewing space is also a little small, but you can easily upgrade the space with an extension table.
User experience:
The average rating of the Brother Innov-Is A80 on Amazon, Sewingmachines.co.uk, and other sites is 4.7 Stars out of 5 Stars. Most of the lower reviews were due to wrong power supplies and other problems outside of Brothers control.
Score:
The Brother Innov-Is A80 is a great sewing machine. It's easy to learn and fun to use. Besides the size and the small wattage, it's almost the perfect sewing machine. You can add more space to the Brother Innov-Is A80 by purchasing an extension table.
We give the Brother Innov-Is A80 an 8/10 score.
