First Impressions:
When we received the sewing machine, it was clear how heavy it was. The sewing machine alone was over 11kgs (25lb)! For me, this isn't a problem. I have a sewing studio and the sewing machine will be stationary, But it did also take up a lot of space! Almost half a meter wide (44cms or 17,2")!
The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 is easy to thread and operate when you understand it. As a professional seamstress and a sewing machine tester, this was easier than expected. But I can see why this isn't the best starter sewing machine for beginners.

The performance is quite good and it's easy to feel in control of the machine.
The Needle threader was easy to understand and operate and the thread cutter was just amazing.
The quilting capabilities and the buttonhole options are also good. The Freehand embroidery was hard to review as I have never done this before. But it was fun and I can't wait to learn how to do it properly.
Made for quilters, but.
Looking at the specifications of the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 it's clear that this sewing machine is made for experienced sewers/quilters or beginners with higher technical understanding or patience. You can do almost any type of sewing on this machine, but it's very clear that freehand embroidery and quilters are the main target group for this machine. But it is also a good all-around machine.
Older technology
In 2010, just 2 years after the release of the first iPhone, the Quantum Stylist 9960 was without a doubt a small technical revolution. In 2022 however, the technology can feel a bit over the top. The Quantum Stylist is not a technical marvel but the Quantum Stylist 9960s technology holds up good and it's doing an ok job in improving the sewing experience.
Recommended Review:
Build Quality
In this sewing machine, we can find the quality plastic that the singer is known for. It does also have a heavy-duty aluminum frame. Most of the components in this sewing machine are quite impressive. But the tension discs and the bobbin holder are not. The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 needs to be serviced regularly.
Lacking power
The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 is not made for those who want to sew in multilayers. After 3 layers of denim and canvas, it's really struggling. Looking at the specification you understand why. The small 55W engine is not a heavy-duty engine in 2022. If we compare the Singer Quantum Stylist to the Singers Heavy duty series, we see that the Quantum Stylist has 35% less power and it can deliver 250 stitches pr. a minute less than the heavy-duty. The other components in the machine, like the tension discs, are also much weaker than a modern 2022 sewing machine.
The Conclusion
If the singer Quantum Stylist 9960 fulfills all of your demands in a sewing machine the singer Quantum Stylist 9960 is a great buy, also in 2022. If not, there are many other great options that do each task better, easier, and cheaper. Brother SE600 is a great buy. So is Husqvarna Opal 650
The Price
Buying a new Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 from Singer in 2022 will set you back around 600 USD, so it's still a very expensive all-around sewing machine, especially if you study some of the prices of Singer's competitors. With these prices, it's only natural to study second-hand options.
Buying Second Hand
Buying a sewing machine second-hand is usually a good idea. It's good for both the environment and the wallet.
There is a lot of money to be saved on buying the Quantum Stylist 9960 second-hand. But make sure that the machine you are buying has been serviced recently. If possible, take the sewing machine to a shop that can study the tension discs and the oil and grease areas.
